Burnout
Burnout is a state of chronic physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to overwhelming stress — most commonly in the context of work, caregiving, or other high-demand roles. It goes beyond ordinary tiredness; burnout represents a deep depletion that rest alone often cannot resolve, and is characterized by emotional detachment, a loss of motivation and purpose, reduced performance, cynicism, and a pervasive sense of having nothing left to give. It affects people across all professions and backgrounds, though it is particularly prevalent among high achievers, caregivers, healthcare workers, and anyone operating in environments with chronic high demands and insufficient support or recovery time. Left unaddressed, burnout can progress into clinical depression, anxiety disorders, and significant physical health consequences including immune dysregulation and cardiovascular strain. Neurologically, burnout is associated with dysregulation of the brain's stress response systems — prolonged overactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis leads to disrupted cortisol patterns, while the prefrontal cortex becomes functionally compromised, impairing decision-making, emotional regulation, and the ability to experience reward and meaning.
