Irritability
Irritability is a state of heightened emotional reactivity in which a person experiences a persistently low threshold for frustration, agitation, and anger — resulting in responses that feel disproportionate to the situation and difficult to control. It is not simply being in a bad mood; chronic irritability represents a pattern in which the nervous system is consistently primed to react, leaving the person feeling on edge, easily triggered, and often guilty or distressed about their own reactions after the fact. It affects people of all ages — including children and adolescents, in whom it is often a primary presentation of underlying mood or anxiety disorders — and can arise from or accompany a wide range of conditions including depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, hormonal imbalances, chronic pain, poor sleep, burnout, and substance use. Chronic irritability places significant strain on relationships, parenting, professional performance, and self-image, and is frequently one of the most distressing symptoms a person experiences — both for themselves and those around them. Neurologically, irritability reflects an imbalance between the brain's threat and emotional reactivity systems and its capacity for regulation and perspective — the amygdala fires quickly and intensely while the prefrontal cortex, responsible for pausing, reflecting, and modulating that response, is insufficiently engaged to provide effective override. The autonomic nervous system is also typically dysregulated in chronic irritability, with the body maintained in a low-grade fight-or-flight state that lowers the threshold for reactive responses.
Neurofeedback can help by training the brain toward greater balance between these systems — calming overactive emotional reactivity while strengthening the frontal regulatory networks that allow for pause, perspective, and measured response. Neuromodulation approaches such as tDCS can further support prefrontal engagement and emotional control, while tVNS works to calm the underlying autonomic dysregulation that keeps the nervous system perpetually primed to react.
