Migraines
Migraines are a neurological condition characterized by recurring episodes of intense, often throbbing head pain — typically on one side of the head — accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, visual disturbances, and in some cases temporary neurological symptoms like numbness or difficulty speaking. They are far more than bad headaches; migraines are a complex brain event that can be completely debilitating for hours or even days at a time. They affect people of all ages and backgrounds but are significantly more common in women, and often run in families. Triggers vary widely from person to person and can include hormonal changes, stress, poor sleep, certain foods, dehydration, and sensory overload. Neurologically, migraines involve a hyperexcitable brain — one that is more reactive to stimulation than average — combined with waves of abnormal electrical activity, dysregulation of pain processing pathways, and dysfunction in the brain's ability to filter and regulate sensory input. The autonomic nervous system is also heavily involved, contributing to the wide range of physical symptoms that accompany migraine attacks.
Neurofeedback can help by training the brain toward greater stability and resilience — reducing the cortical hyperexcitability that makes the brain susceptible to migraine episodes and helping to build a calmer, more regulated neurological baseline over time.
