It affects people of all ages, though its roots are often established early in life, and it can place significant strain on relationships, professional functioning, and an individual's overall sense of self and stability.
Neurologically, emotional dysregulation involves an imbalance between the brain's emotional accelerator and its braking system — the amygdala, which generates emotional responses, becomes overactive and hypersensitive, while the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for putting the brakes on those responses and restoring rational perspective, struggles to keep pace. This creates a nervous system that is quick to ignite and slow to settle, leaving the person feeling at the mercy of their own emotional reactions.
